From sailboats to spaceships, aerodynamics have paved the way. Section one of this CD-ROM examines the aerodynamics of seafaring vessels, focusing on how an understanding of the effects of drag on the lugsails of ancient Chinese junks led to modern successes in streamlining cars and trains. In section two, industrial aerodynamics are studied, with a discussion of the need for adequate airflow in steel-making furnaces, the concept of atomization, and the proper design of heating and cooling units. And section three investigates aerodynamic forces that affect space travel, such as solar radiation pressure, electromagnetic force, and electrostatic drag; spaceships designed to outmaneuver these aerodynamic forces; and possible aerodynamic challenges that may be encountered on other planets.
