This program presents both scientific and anecdotal evidence to illustrate the changing dynamics of the mother/son relationship in a culture where single-mother households are increasing and sons are taking longer to leave the nest. Mothers and sons drawn from the British royal family, with their very public strengths and flaws, provide a starting point for a narrative in which long-term studies refute assumptions about gender distinctions and stereotypical masculine behavior, connect unhealthy levels of cortisol in boys to maternal mistreatment, and link postnatal depression with lower IQs among sons. Attachment theory is emphasized. A Discovery Channel Production. (48 minutes)
