Soil, air, and water in the Netherlands are heavily polluted, and stringent efforts are being made to clean them up. An example of this is the development of anaerobic waste water purification. Industrial effluent is purified by bacteria under anoxic conditions. Cees Buisman specializes in the use of sulfur bacteria to remove harmful substances. The processes he uses are very similar to what happens in an ordinary drainage ditch, only much quicker. (14 minutes)
